The London South area includes:
 •  The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames
 •  The London Boroughs of:
 •  Richmond upon Thames
 •  Merton
 •  Sutton
 •  Croydon
 •  Bromley.
The partnership aims to:
 •  Raise the profile of Aimhigher in the areas not touched by Excellence Challenge, to benefit target groups of learners.
 •  Extend and exchange Aimhigher good practice.
 •  Raise the profile of vocational progression pathways and make them integral to Aimhigher planning by 2006.
 •  Develop targets with individual institutions that relate to progression rates to HE.

The Croydon Aimhigher Partnership started in September 2003 and has recently expanded to include 5 more secondary schools. Croydon has 2 part-time co-ordinators. The other 5 boroughs formed Aimhigher clusters in September 2004 and co-ordination is by the London South team, with LEA support.

The London South area is unusually diverse in its social and economic characteristics.

It is a largely prosperous sub region of a great world city, with low unemployment and over 25% of local workers in sophisticated, knowledge based, well paid, value-adding employments.

But there are pockets of entrenched deprivation, economic poverty and social exclusion. 1 in 10 people in the local work force has no qualifications; 20% have low levels of literacy; and nearly one third are inadequately qualified.
